Good Nite, Don't let the bed bugs bite!!!!

JUNE!!!

Well...............I still haven't gotten the hang of blogging on a regular basis.  I need to figure out how to blog from my phone and then I do think I will be a bit better and more regular!!!  So I have continued my work on the yard!  The fitzer bush on the hill in the backyard has been pruned quite a bit.  I decided not to take it out completely because when I got alot of the dead dried out stuff removed I discovered new growth so I left a bit of the green and a lot of the bare gnarled wood which looks like a natural sculpture.  I made terraced beds and planted a bunch of wildflower seeds and some zinnia seeds as well.  Its been about 2 weeks since the seeds were planted and they are now coming up.  I can't wait until the flowers are all up and blooming!  The work on the yard continues...........it will be a long ongoing project but hoping by summers end all of the trees will be trimmed, bushes pruned, weeds pulled, and flowers growing!!!

Now for an update on the newest batch of chicks they have been living outside for about 2 weeks and are adjusting well.  They love their new space and enjoy exploring the great outdoors.  They love finding and eating worms and have now received their first real "TREATS"!!  They love scratch and also veggie scraps!!  They especially love purple cabbage!!    As for the big girls............they have started laying more than they had been which is great news for all of my egg customers.  I hung out with Rambunctious, my oldest hen (7 years old and from my original batch of babies) today on the back porch.  We sat in the wicker rocking chair and rocked and talked.  When she was just a few months old and injured by our dogs, with a lot of TLC, Neosporin, and rocking and talking she not only survived but thrived and continues to  be the matriarch of my flock of chickens!!

May Showers!!

Well.........today is a day that I realize why I love Colorado so much!  It is raining and the weather person just said it is highly possible that we will see snow!  The weather in Colorado is always changing & surprising..   So the first order of business this morning was to check on the baby chicks & make sure that the heat lamps were turned on........they are still babies after all!!  There are many reasons that the rain is good news........free water for all of the plants here on the farm, the rain water always washes the surface of everything giving it a new clean look, & my favorite reason for the rain today is that I can take a break from helping Papa Medina in the yard.  I helped him all day yesterday and today I am more that a bit sore for over doing it yesterday.  Its been years since the fitzer bushes have been trimmed, pruned, and cleaned so that has been my focus.  It is starting to  look great and I am looking forward to planting flowers in the new open spaces created by cutting the bushes.  Still lots to do in the yard but it will not be accomplished in a few days  but more than likely will be an ongoing summer project.  Still have to plant the garden......hope to do that in the next few days.  Also planning on painting the iron furniture......tables & chairs will be black, the smaller tables will be a variety of fluorescent green, pink, & yellow........just to add a bit of whimsical fun to our patio!!

The baby chicks are doing great even though we have lost 3 to date.  I don't think we should loose any more as they all seem very established and perky.  They are so adorable and it always amazes me at the rate at which they get their feathers and grow.  I need to remember to take some more photos to document their short infancy stages!

Well................I haven't blogged in a while.  Lots to catch up on.  I am the proud mama of 70 new baby chicks.  They are between 1-3 weeks old at this point.  I got about 30 araucanas, silver laced wyandottes, black australorps, buff orpingtons, buff polish, california whites, cherry eggers, cinnamon queens, and golden spangled hamburgs.  I just love baby chicks.....they are fluffy, cute, and their peeps are just adorable!!  They grow so quickly, the oldest chicks have all started getting their pin feathers and many others have also started to get theirs as well.  I am really excited to have my egg laying flock replenished!!  Come late summer, early fall I will have lots of eggs for sale!!  I have lost three of the chicks which is always a bummer but with so many chicks it is to be expected.  I try my best to support them and help them in hopes of survival or just to make them comfortable until they cross over the rainbow bridge!

Spring Marches ON!

How time flys......I can't believe it's been 10 days since my last post.  I have place my order for baby chicks which will arrive Friday, April 22.  My flock is at about 35-40ish chickens right now but only yielding about 6-10 eggs a day--not nearly enough for all of my faithful egg customers!! Sooooo the time has come to thin the flock and it is always fun to get baby chicks.  I have ordered several  Araucanas as well as Black Australorps, Barred Rock, Cherry Eggers, Buff Orpingtons, and a couple of other breeds that I can't remember now.   I will need to  thin my flock of adult chickens before the babies are joined with their new family.

Last weekend I had the wonderful opportunity of 3 days of stitching- 2 days of class with Catherine Theron- Friday was Peaceable Kingdom & Saturday was Catherine's Quaker Sewing Case.  I really like both of these projects but must say I absolutely LOVE Peaceable Kingdom.  It is a very large piece with many different stitches so it will be challenging for me.  It is just gorgeous!!  The Quaker Sewing Case will be fun and a quick stitch.  The finishing seems like it will be easy as well!  Sunday was just free stitching so worked on the Quaker Sewing Case & caught up with an old friend who has now joined Sampler Guild!  It is always fun to reconnect with old friends!  I will post photos as I progress with both of these projects.  My goal is to chronicle my stitching projects this year and meet some self set goals!

Spring Skiing!!

The first weekend in April finds me at our place in the mountains skiing!!  I had forgotten how much I love spring skiing.  The suns out which means I don't have to wear a gazillion layers and still be cold!  We skied at Breckenridge and then rocked out to  Air Dubai & Flobots at the base of Peak 8.  More later as the power has gone out & I should conserve the laptop energy!!
